The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday conducted a raid at the residence of Vijay Choudhary, brother of deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary, in Jammu, escalating political tensions in the Union Territory amid ongoing scrutiny of alleged irregularities in the mining sector.
The deputy chief minister currently holds the crucial mining portfolio in Jammu and Kashmir and the development is being viewed as a significant move by the anti-corruption watchdog, particularly in light of persistent allegations surrounding illegal mining operations across the region.
Top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 that the raid is linked to investigations into a purported illegal mining racket operating in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Allegations suggest possible involvement or indirect benefits accruing through family members in connection with mining activities that fall under the deputy chief minister’s administrative oversight.
While there has been no official statement detailing specific charges against Vijay Choudhary, opposition parties have long raised concerns in the assembly regarding illegal extraction of sand, gravel, and boulders, accusing the government of failing to enforce regulations effectively. Surinder Choudhary, in his capacity as mining minister, has repeatedly faced criticism over what opponents describe as lax enforcement and selective action against violators.
Critics have also alleged favouritism toward certain stone crusher operators and mining contractors, some of whom are believed to have political or bureaucratic connections. Complaints from districts such as Kathua have pointed to alleged manipulation in land allotments and irregularities benefiting select entities.
The ACB has been particularly active in recent months, registering cases related to corruption, illegal appointments, and bribery within various departments. The latest raid is expected to intensify political pressure on the deputy chief minister, especially given past accusations of irregularities in the mining sector and claims of revenue loss and environmental degradation due to unchecked extraction activities.
The deputy CM has previously vowed strict action against illegal mining and assured transparency in the functioning of the department. However, the ACB’s action against his brother is likely to fuel fresh debate in the assembly and sharpen opposition attacks in the coming days.
Officials have not yet disclosed whether further searches or summons are expected as part of the ongoing investigation.
