What began as a small scuffle between a shop owner and a Gujarat couple ended in a life-altering tragedy after a gunshot inside a convenience store in Louisiana left a 30-year-old woman critically injured. Her husband has since been arrested in connection with the incident, while she continues to battle for survival.

The woman has been left with severe facial injuries, and doctors warn that her recovery will be long and complex, requiring multiple surgeries.

The victim, identified as Jigisha alias Soniya Gajera, was critically injured on April 4 inside Mezo Grocery and Deli in Bossier City. Police said the firearm was in the possession of her husband, Sharad Gajera, when it discharged at close range, with the bullet entering through her mouth and exiting her jaw, Times of India reported.

Authorities said the couple had been in talks with store owner Vince Mezo regarding the possible purchase of the shop at the time of the incident. Sharad Gajera was arrested on April 21 on charges of illegal use of a weapon after surrendering to police following the issuance of a warrant.

While investigators have termed the firing accidental, questions have been raised over the circumstances. Eyewitnesses told local media that the couple was speaking with the store owner when the gun suddenly went off, with some expressing concern over the presence of a loaded weapon in a public space.

Soniya remains in critical condition at a hospital in Bossier City. Doctors said the injuries have severely affected her jaw, teeth and lower lip, leaving her unable to eat normally. She is currently reliant on assisted breathing and artificial nutrition and continues to be in a fragile state.

Officials have not revealed details about the couple’s immigration status.

Meanwhile, members of the community have initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support her treatment. The fundraiser has set a target of $2,00,000 (approximately Rs 1.9 crore) and recounts her struggles and resilience. According to the appeal, she had recently moved to the United States with aspirations of becoming a cosmetologist while working part-time.

The appeal also highlights her personal challenges, including the loss of her younger brother and her role in caring for her father during his illness. Supporters have described her as a source of strength who is now facing a difficult battle away from home.

As of April 24, the campaign had raised $9,135 (around Rs 8.6 lakh) through 51 donations, a small portion of the total amount required.
