Tyler Robinson, the accused in the assassination of conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk, cried before his roommate and told him that he “wished he hadn’t done it" the day after the fatal shooting at Utah Valley University. A preliminary hearing began in a Utah court this week, where prosecutors would present evidence and seek a murder trial for the suspect.

Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist and the co-founder of Turning Point USA, died after being fatally shot in September 2025. He was addressing a rally of thousands at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson –– who surrendered before investigators last year –– is charged with aggravated murder.

“He started crying a little bit and said he wishes he hadn’t done it, and then kept going around and just doing stuff, I think to keep himself busy or distracted or something," said Lance Twiggs, now the former roommate of Robinson, in a videotaped interview presented before the court, CNN reported.

He added that the accused had told him that he would speak to his parents about the incident or “turn himself over“.

Prosecutors To Seek Death Penalty For Robinson

Prosecutors are laying down evidence before the Utah court –– including results of DNA testing and surveillance footage –– to try convincing the judge that there’s sufficient ground to believe that Robinson was behind the crime.

If the judge is satisfied with the evidence, the accused will be proceeded for a murder trial and made to formally enter pleas.

Robinson, 23, is charged with aggravated murder, felony use of a firearm, committing a violent offense in the presence of a child and witness tampering, according to CNN.

Charlie Kirk’s Killing

Charlie Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot dead on September 2025 at Utah Valley University while he was addressing a gathering of thousands at the venue.

On this Monday, a formal hearing in the case began in a Utah court. This marked the first time Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, came face-to-face with the alleged assassin of her husband. His parents –– Robert and Kathryn Kirk –– also faced the defendant for the first time as they accompanied their daughter-in-law to the court.
