Aden Holloway, one of Alabama’s top basketball players, is now in serious trouble just days before March Madness. Police in Tuscaloosa say they found more than 2 pounds of marijuana inside his apartment.
Soon after, Holloway was arrested on Monday morning and taken off campus, the University of Alabama confirmed. According to AL.com, the amount found was about 964 grams. That led to a first-degree marijuana possession charge, which is a felony in Alabama. He also faces another felony charge for not having a tax stamp on the substance. While speaking to officers, Holloway first said he wanted to stay silent. But then, as written in court documents, he said, “Holloway stated that he wanted to remain silent, but then stated that he only smokes.”
The timing makes this even bigger, as Alabama is about to begin its March Madness run. The team is now preparing to play without one of its key guards.Alabama guard Aden Holloway faces felony charges as AL.com report details police claims, agent response, and Nate Oats reaction before March Madness
He said, “What we’ve learned so far, even though it was a large quantity of marijuana, it’s personal use on his part… sounds like there’s no evidence of drug distribution or sales.”
Still, the charges remain heavy. Holloway was booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail at 9:48 a.m. on Monday. He was released about an hour later after posting a $5,000 bond. The University of Alabama has already started its own review. At the same time, the team has suspended him.
Head coach Nate Oats spoke openly about the situation on his radio show. He said, “We’re disappointed in his behavior. With that said, we still love him. He’s still our guy. We’re going to get him the help that he needs, and we’re going to continue to help him whatever way we can.”This puts Alabama in a tough spot. Holloway has been one of their standout players this season. Now, the No. 4 seed team will likely face Hofstra in the first round without him. Oats also made it clear the team is already preparing for that possibility. For now, the focus shifts away from basketball and toward what happens next in this case. Both the legal process and the university’s decision will shape Holloway’s future in the coming days.
