Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that he was attacked during a poll campaign event in West Bengal’s Berhampore on Saturday morning. The Congress leader claimed that the assault was carried out by armed miscreants allegedly brought in by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Chowdhury further said he had earlier warned the administration about the possibility of such an incident, but no preventive measures were taken, raising concerns over security arrangements during the ongoing election campaign.

According to a statement issued by Chowdhury’s office, the incident took place near BT College during a campaign programme that had been pre-approved by the Election Commission of India. The statement claimed that a group of TMC supporters, carrying party flags, engaged in aggressive behaviour, heckled Congress workers, and attempted to attack the senior Congress leader, who is contesting the state assembly polls from Berhampore.

“During the campaign, a group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) miscreants, carrying party flags, resorted to aggressive behavior by heckling our party workers with clear intent to intimidate, provoke, and physically harm them. They also attempted to target and attack our candidate, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury," the statement read.

Congress Demands Action Against Accused

The Congress alleged that the disruptions occurred at multiple points along the permitted route, with party workers being intimidated and obstructed. It further claimed that there was an attempt to target Chowdhury, who is under security protection, raising concerns about his safety.

Calling the incidents a “violation of the Model Code of Conduct," the statement said such actions could undermine free and fair elections and create an “atmosphere of fear" among voters.

“…At multiple points along the route, groups of TMC workers deliberately created obstructions, heckled our workers, and attempted to disrupt the programme and attack Shri Chowdhury. Such repeated acts are a blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct and are highly detrimental to the conduct of free and fair elections," the statement further read.

Chowdhury’s office has urged authorities to take strict legal action against those involved, ensure arrests of the accused, enhance security arrangements for campaign events, and fix accountability on local law enforcement for failing to prevent repeated disruptions.
