Judicial Layout in Bengaluru is an upscale locality with many homeowners living abroad. The area is well connected, and security is often managed by the homeowners themselves through remote CCTV setups.

Despite all the technology guarding houses in this sophisticated neighbourhood, a 19-year-old labourer wiped a house clean and made away with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 3 crore. While the sheer scale of the theft is shocking, the meticulous planning behind the act reveals a chilling level of patience and observation.

A Long-Term Plan

The suspect, Velaram, originally from Rajasthan, had travelled to Bengaluru in search of a livelihood a few months ago. He found employment as a daily-wage labourer, specializing in cutting tiles and installing granite at a construction site. It was here that his criminal ambition began to take shape.

Directly adjacent to his workplace stood a luxury villa owned by a family settled in the United States. Because the owners visited their Indian residence only once or twice a year, the house remained vacant for long stretches. To a casual observer, it was just another quiet property. But to Velaram, it became a target that required careful planning.

For nearly six months, Velaram lived a double life. By day, he worked as a labourer alongside 20 other youths from his home state. During breaks and at night, he closely studied the neighbouring villa.

He monitored security movements, mapped the internal layout of the rooms, and eventually identified the exact location of the heavy-duty locker. His proximity to the house allowed him to plan the crime carefully, without raising suspicion among his co-workers or neighbours.

The Heist and the Digital Trap

On the day of the crime, Velaram executed his plan with clinical precision. He slipped into the villa through a sliding glass door, a vulnerability he had likely identified months earlier. Though he did not know the amount of wealth inside the locker, he trusted his luck.

After breaking open the locker, he found a haul that exceeded even his expectations. Gold jewellery weighing about 1.8 kg, high-value diamond ornaments and a significant amount of cash were inside.

Overwhelmed by the success of his plan, he packed the valuables into a bag and immediately fled the city. Without informing his fellow workers or friends, he headed straight back to his village in Rajasthan to hide the loot.

“He believed that by putting thousands of kilometres between himself and the crime scene, he had managed a clean escape. However, he had underestimated the very technology the homeowners relied on to monitor their property from America" said the police to News18 Kannada after cracking the case.

A Virtual Arrest

Despite being on a different continent, the homeowners remained vigilant. While checking their remote CCTV feed through a smartphone app, they noticed suspicious activity inside the house. The high-definition cameras had captured Velaram’s every move, from his entry into the house to the moment he walked out carrying the bag.

The owners immediately contacted relatives in Bengaluru, who filed a complaint at the Yelahanka Police Station. Armed with the clear CCTV footage, the police were able to identify the suspect almost instantly.

A special team from the Yelahanka police station then tracked his mobile signals and travel route to Rajasthan. In a swift cross-state operation, officers intercepted Velaram at his home, arrested him and recovered the entire stash.

A Lesson in Modern Vigilance

The incident serves as a dual reminder for urban residents. On one hand, it highlights the growing threat of insider surveillance, where workers at nearby sites may closely observe the habits and routines of homeowners. On the other hand, it demonstrates how modern technology, such as remote-access CCTV systems, can become a powerful tool in solving crimes.

The 19-year-old’s six-month plan was dismantled in a matter of days by a digital eye that never sleeps. As Bengaluru continues to expand, this case stands as a cautionary tale.
