The Karnataka legislative assembly is set to undergo a significant aesthetic transformation as Speaker UT Khader announced the installation of ornate rosewood doors at all four main entrances of the Vidhana Soudha. The decision follows the positive reception of a similar rosewood entrance previously installed at the Western Gate, which leads directly to the assembly hall.

The Speaker emphasised that the project aims to enhance the architectural grandeur of the state’s power house, ensuring it remains a premier attraction for the thousands of domestic and international tourists who visit the landmark to take photographs and explore its history through newly introduced guided tours.

The ambitious renovation project is expected to carry a substantial price tag, with preliminary estimates suggesting a cost of approximately Rs 70-80 lakh per door. The craftsmanship will be managed through a collaboration between the Public Works Department and the Karnataka State Forest Development Corporation.

Defending the move, Khader said: “The Vidhana Soudha is not just for representatives and officials; it must become a centre for the common man. People who come to Bengaluru always take photos in front of the Vidhana Soudha, so its beauty must be enhanced. We have introduced touring guides because people from across the country and the world come to see this building." He further noted that the rosewood doors are intended to be a global talking point, adding: “The goal is for this to be a model; those who see it should talk about it across the country and the world."

However, the move has not been without its share of political and public friction. This latest upgrade follows a series of controversial additions to the assembly, including the installation of high-end recliners and massage chairs for legislators, as well as the provision of complimentary gourmet meals. Critics and opposition members, including former Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, have previously raised concerns regarding the necessity of such luxury upgrades and the transparency of the associated costs. Social media platforms have also seen a surge in debates, with citizens questioning the prioritisation of lawmaker comforts and expensive renovations over other pressing public needs.

The BJP also hit out at the Speaker’s move to add the doors, with party leader Suresh Kumar saying: “There is no money for roadworks but they are spending money on doors etc, which is unnecessary. The Speaker won’t be able to leave a footprint behind with such initiatives. There might be an ulterior motive as well."

In response to enquiries regarding the budget and the scale of the work, PWD minister Satish Jarkiholi maintained a neutral stance, noting that matters concerning the Vidhana Soudha premises fall under the direct jurisdiction of the Speaker.

“That comes under the Speaker’s authority. He will know what is being done there," Jarkiholi remarked. When questioned specifically about whether the costs were becoming excessive, the minister added, “We do not have information on that yet; we will look into it."
