Colva: In the wake of the violent gang clash at Mungul, where gunshots were fired and weapons brandished, and the recent assault on police personnel at Betul, DGP Alok Kumar on Monday visited the South Goa police district headquarters at Margao to review the law and order situation.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, DGP Kumar said the department has taken a “serious view” of the Mungul shootout. He confirmed that 18 people have been arrested in connection with the incident and said that strict action will follow to send a strong message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated. On Aug 12, a group of people, some masked, attacked two youths on the Margao-Colva road. The assailants, using swords, sticks, soda bottles, and other weapons, had assaulted the victims and fired shots at their car, causing injuries to the victims and damaging their vehicleHighlighting another concern, Kumar said that unlicensed private security agencies would soon be identified, and legal measures would be taken against those without proper authorisation.On the recent incident at Canaginium on Aug 17, where two constables were assaulted, the police chief stated that six suspects have already been taken into custody. “They will be dealt with firmly, as per the law of the land,” he said, emphasising the force’s zero-tolerance approach towards attacks on law enforcers.With these developments, the police have sought to reassure the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state.
