A woman has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra for allegedly murdering her husband and concealing his body beneath the floor of the bathroom in their home. Investigators were also probing whether others helped her carry out the crime and dispose of the body.

The victim, identified as Surendra Sharma, had been missing for nearly 45 days. Acting on fresh leads, police dug up the bathroom floor after removing a layer of plaster and recovered his body, NDTV reported.

Motive Behind Murder Remains Unknown

The incident was reported in the Sikandra area, according to a report in The Times of India. The motive behind the murder is not known yet.

The victim lived with his wife and their two daughters in Agra’s Dahatora locality. A missing person’s complaint regarding his disappearance was filed at the Sikandra police station on May 26, TOI reported.

TOI, citing police, reported that the couple had been married for nearly 16 years. Investigators alleged that on the day of the incident, Ruby sent their two daughters to Surendra’s elder brother’s house before serving her husband kheer (rice pudding) allegedly mixed with sleeping pills. After Surendra became unconscious, the accused wife allegedly strangled him to death. Investigators said she then dug a pit in the bathroom the following morning, buried the body and sealed the spot with a layer of cement in an attempt to hide the crime.

According to investigators, the accused, Ruby, allegedly tried to deflect suspicion by actively participating in the search for her missing husband. Police said the investigation took a crucial turn after Surendra’s brother expressed doubts about her account of his disappearance.

Officers said Ruby also attempted to convince neighbours that she was devastated by her husband’s disappearance, often breaking down in tears. However, family members noticed several inconsistencies in her statements, prompting them to press for a deeper investigation, the report mentioned.

After questioning, Ruby allegedly confessed to killing her husband and disclosed the location where she had buried his body, the TOI report claimed.

Police Probe Possible Role Of Accomplices

Further, the body has been sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said they were examining whether anyone else besides the woman was involved in committing the murder and burying the body inside the house. Further investigation was underway.

The incident bears similarities to the February 2025 “blue drum" murder case, in which merchant navy officer Saurabh Rajput was allegedly killed, dismembered and sealed with cement in a blue drum by his wife, Muskaan Rajput, and her alleged lover, Sahil.
