Ahmedabad: The civic body has scrapped temporary speed breakers, mandating that all humps now strictly comply with guidelines and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has adopted a uniform, engineering-based approach for speed calming across its 2,800-km road network to curb urban road fatalities. In residential and high-traffic areas, road humps are being built to a precise 3.7-metre chord length and 0.1-metre height, calibrated to enforce a target speed of 25-30kmph. “Each hump must carry retro-reflective thermoplastic markings, road studs and checkered black-and-white bands to ensure visibility. At hazardous approaches, sets of six transverse thermoplastic bar strips — each up to 15mm in height — are being installed to alert drivers to slow down ahead,” states the AMC’s new Comprehensive Policy on Traffic Management.Beyond physical infrastructure, AMC is redesigning 100 major junctions with tightened turning radii to reduce vehicle speeds at intersections. AI-powered cameras under the SASA Project, and a fleet of interceptor vehicles will now monitor speed violations across the city. In 2025 alone, these systems recorded over 1.03 lakh over-speeding cases.
