Members of the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) have launched a nation-wide signature campaign demanding that all vacant posts in the Union and State government departments be filled immediately.

They are also demanding that the various types of irregularities in recruitment drives be prevented.

The first set of signatures collected from youth in Dharwad district was submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, through the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Dharwad on Sunday.

“The governments have admitted that there are over 9.79 lakh vacancies in 78 Ministries of the Union government and 2,84,881 vacant posts in 43 departments of the State government. But there have been no serious attempts to fill them,” they said.

“We launched the signature campaign a few months ago. In the last four or five months, signatures were collected from youth across the district demanding that these vacancies be filled. The signatures collected from across the country will be submitted to the government and a Youth Mahapanchayat will be organised on April 11 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding immediate recruitment,” they said.

Activists said that large-scale recruitment has not taken place for many years in most of the public sector institutions like banks, railways and LIC.

“Instead, a system of contract and outsourcing is being implemented, effectively stopping recruitment to permanent posts. At the same time, these institutions are gradually being privatised which will further reduce employment opportunities,” they said.

“Youth who have worked hard, taken loans and undergone training to prepare for competitive examinations are becoming mentally distressed due to lack of recruitment. Many have even resorted to suicide. According to 2023 statistics, while 10,786 farmers died by suicide, 14,234 unemployed youth also lost their lives in the same year. Immediate action is required to address this serious issue,” they said.

AIDYO district president Bhavani Shankar Gowda, Akshay Talakal, Yallappa Dore, Siddarama Bijjaragi, Nauman Nadaf and others were present.
