Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia may have a new role in White House after Donald Trump signs order for…

US President Donald Trump has recently signed an executive order to create the position of the country's new

chief design officer

. According to a report by Bloomberg, Trump has chosen Airbnb co-founder

Joe Gebbia

for this role. The tech billionaire has yet to officially accept his "new position" which will place him in charge of a "National Design Studio" located at the White House, with the goal of redesigning government forms and processes. The yet to be announced group will report directly to the White House chief of staff and has a deadline of July 4, 2026, to deliver its first results, the report claims. This move comes after Trump abolished the Obama-era digital design office, known as 18F, earlier this year.

What Joe Gebbia may need to do as White House’s chief design officer

The executive order released by the White House notes that Gebbia’s role (who hasn't it confirmed yet) as the nation’s first chief design officer will be to “prioritise improving websites and physical sites that have a major impact on Americans’ everyday lives.”.This directive could cover services such as income tax filings, Social Security applications, Medicare enrollment, immigration processes, and other widely used government programs, the report suggests. Gebbia, who previously worked in Elon Musk’s now-dismantled Department of Government Efficiency, has already helped simplify the government’s slow retirement system.

What Trump said about ‘America by Design’ initiative

In a White House blog post, Trump wrote: “With this order, I am announcing “America by Design,” a national initiative to improve experiences for Americans, starting by breathing new life into the design of sites where people interface with their Government. It is time to update the Government’s design language to be both usable and beautiful. This effort will be facilitated by a new National Design Studio and by a new Chief Design Officer. The Chief Design Officer will help recruit top creative talent, coordinate with executive departments and agencies (agencies), and devise innovative solutions. It is the policy of my Administration to deliver digital and physical experiences that are both beautiful and efficient, improving the quality of life for our Nation. Towards that end, the National Design Studio will advise agencies on how to reduce duplicative design costs, use standardized design to enhance the public’s trust in high-impact service providers, and dramatically improve the quality of experiences offered to the American public.”
