As Maharashtra mourns Ajit Pawar's death, an astrologer’s old January 28 prediction has resurfaced online - coincidence or something more unsettling?

Shock and disbelief swept across Maharashtra on Wednesday morning following the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash near Baramati.

As news of the tragedy spread, an old video featuring an astrologer resurfaced online and quickly went viral. In the clip, the astrologer is seen issuing a warning about January 28. Soon after the crash on Wednesday, he reshared the same video, claiming that his prediction had come true. The astrologer has been identified as Sumitacharya Maharaj. According to reports, he had spoken about a possible plane crash on January 28 nearly a year ago during a newspaper interview and on several podcasts, and had repeated the claim multiple times across social media platforms.

Following Ajit Pawar’s death, Sumitacharya Maharaj shared screenshots and clips from his earlier videos on his Instagram account (@sumitacharyajimaharaj), presenting them as proof that he had made the prediction well in advance. His prediction was not limited to January 28 alone. The astrologer also issued a broader warning, advising people not to travel by air between January 28 and February 27. He claimed there would be danger during this period and suggested cancelling flight plans if possible.

Despite the matching date, many social media users have questioned the credibility of the claim. Several pointed out that the astrologer mentioned the ‘North-East’ direction in his prediction, while Baramati in Pune district, Maharashtra, does not fall in that direction. This has led many to believe it may have been a coincidence or a vague guess.

Although the video continues to circulate widely online, there is no scientific evidence to support the astrologer’s claims.
