AMRITSAR: The Akal Takht Secretariat has written to all Sikh MLAs and Sikh Cabinet ministers in Punjab, asking them to attend a meeting on June 29 to discuss and share their views on the amendment to the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.In a statement issued on Thursday, the Secretariat claimed that the Punjab government passed the legislation in April 2026 without consulting or obtaining the consent of the Akal Takht, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), or the Guru Khalsa Panth.Akal Takht Secretariat in-charge Bagicha Singh said official letters were sent to Sikh MLAs and Cabinet ministers via email and WhatsApp on June 17 and 18, using contact details available on the Punjab Legislative Assembly's official website.
He added that Secretariat officials also contacted all MLAs and ministers by phone to inform them about the communication.According to the Secretariat, a separate letter was sent to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on June 23.Acting on the directions of Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, Sikh MLAs and Cabinet ministers have been asked to attend the meeting at the Akal Takht Secretariat at 11 am on June 29 to deliberate on the amendment and present their views.
Letters have also been sent to non-Sikh Cabinet ministers, requesting them to submit their views in writing before June 29.The Secretariat said it is seeking feedback from elected representatives before taking a considered position on the legal amendment.
