This wasn’t the script the San Antonio Spurs had in mind.
Just days after riding high on a historic playoff debut, Victor Wembanyama suffered a frightening fall in Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers, bringing San Antonio crashing back to reality for a hot second.
Midway through the second quarter, Wembanyama attacked the rim, spinning past Jrue Holiday before absorbing contact.
Unable to brace his fall, the 22-year-old hit the floor face-first, his jaw slamming into the court. He lay motionless for a brief but worrying moment with 8:57 left in the quarter as the San Antonio crowd held their breath in anticipation.
He eventually got up and walked to the locker room, but the damage was done. Shortly after, the Spurs confirmed he had entered concussion protocol and would not return for the remainder of the game.
Wemby had scored 5 points on 1-of-3 shooting in 12 minutes, at that point.
A Massive Blow at the Worst Time
This couldn’t have come at a worse moment.
The Spurs are in the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and are locked in a tight first-round battle, trying to protect home-court advantage. And Wembanyama has been the engine behind it all.
Just one game earlier, he delivered a 35-point playoff debut — the highest in franchise history, surpassing Tim Duncan’s 32-point mark from 1998.
Take him out of the equation, and the entire dynamic shifts.
From Peak ‘Alien’ to Sudden Uncertainty
Wembanyama had just been crowned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year — unanimously, and had become the first player ever to pull off the feat. (on top of being the youngest ever to win the award)
Oh, and not to forget, he’s also in the MVP race alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.
Averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, a league-best 3.1 blocks, and a steal per game, the 22-year-old anchored one of the league’s most disruptive defenses — which ultimately guided the Spurs to the league’s second-best record in the regular season.
Head injuries are unpredictable, and even a short absence could swing the series — and a longer layoff could derail San Antonio’s postseason entirely.
