After a high-stakes meeting of the Punjab Congress unit, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel struck an optimistic tone and asserted, “All is well", while also adding that the leaders were with the high command.
The meeting was held at the residence of Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit in Chandigarh on Saturday, July 11, and was attended by dozens of Congress leaders, including sitting MLAs and former MLAs.
The remarks unfolded against the backdrop of a power tussle within the Punjab unit of the Congress. While the Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi-led faction has been seeking the removal of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Baghel has reportedly insisted that appointments once made by the top leadership cannot be reversed.
“I have heard everything from the Charanjit Singh Channi faction. Now the high command will be informed about the matter", Baghel, the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab, told CNN-News18, adding, “everybody is with the high command".
Asked about the distribution of tickets in the upcoming Punjab Assembly Election in 2027, the Congress leader said: “No discussion was held on ticket distribution. However, only capable candidates will get the ticket".
Attempting to project unity within the Punjab Congress unit, Baghel told CNN-News18: “All is well".
How The Rift Unfolded
On July 1, the Congress announced that Amrinder Singh Raja Warring would continue as the president of the party’s Punjab unit. Meanwhile, Channi was named the chairperson of the election campaign committee.
Channi, who was reportedly upset over not being appointed as the party’s state president, had avoided meeting Baghel, who reached Punjab this week. He also held multiple rounds of meetings with the state’s leaders and office-bearers.
Baghel had already dismissed any change in the state’s leadership structure, asserting the decision was made by the high command.
In what can be viewed as a breakthrough amid the tussle, Channi announced Friday that his camp had invited Bhupesh Baghel to convey their sentiments to the leadership. “United for Punjab. We have invited Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel ji on July 11 to place before him the sentiments of Congress workers and the people of Punjab", he said in a post on ‘X’.
