US-Iran Talks: After the end of talks on peace deal in Switzerland on Sunday, US Vice President JD Vance announced the accomplishment of opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the ending of the Iranian nuclear programme.

The framework was signed on the night of June 17 at the Palace of Versailles in France. US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the memorandum.

The Sunday’s meeting was the first high-level engagement since the two sides reached a preliminary accord aimed at ending nearly four months of conflict.

After the meeting, Vance told reporters: “The opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the ending of the Iranian nuclear programme—these things have already been accomplished."

He further said: “The question is now how much more we can accomplish together. Can we change relations in the Middle East permanently, or do we go back to doing things the old way, which is not our preference but certainly a thing that can happen."

Addressing the media alongside Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatari PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani after the US-Iran talks, Vance claimed “great progress" had been made in the high-level talks with Iran.

President Donald Trump has empowered all sides to find a diplomatic solution to a host of issues, the Vice President said.

He further said the US was willing to “fundamentally transform" its relations with Iran if the latter is willing to “give up being a driver of regional instability" and give up nuclear weapon ambitions for the long term.

He added the two countries now see a future where “everyone can work together to promote peace and prosperity."
