Member of Legislative Council Hemalatha Nayak on Sunday said that B.R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram, who fought for equality in society, are like “two eyes” for the people.
She was speaking after inaugurating the 119th birth anniversary celebrations of Babu Jagjivan Ram, architect of the Green Revolution, at Sahitya Bhavan in Koppal.
The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, the Zilla Panchayat, the Social Welfare Department and the Koppal City Municipal Council.
Ms. Nayak said that Jagjivan Ram worked tirelessly to uplift oppressed sections and played a key role in addressing food scarcity in the country by strengthening agricultural production.
“His life and achievements are a guiding light for society and underline the importance of equality and social justice. The younger generation must imbibe his ideals,” she said.
Deputy Commissioner Suresh B. Itnal said that Jagjivan Ram’s contributions to agriculture and defence are remarkable.
He noted that during the food crisis of the late 1960s, Jagjivan Ram’s decisive leadership as Union Agriculture and Food Minister helped the country achieve self-sufficiency.
“The success of the Green Revolution stands as a testament to his administrative ability and vision,” he added.
Delivering a special lecture, Associate Professor at Government First Grade College, Kukanur taluk, Prabhuraj K.N. described Jagjivan Ram as a freedom fighter, social reformer and statesman who dedicated his life to equality and upliftment of the marginalised communities.
He highlighted Jagjivan Ram’s role in the freedom movement under Mahatma Gandhi and his contributions in various Union Ministries, particularly in agriculture, defence and labour.
Earlier, floral tributes were paid to Ambedkar, Basaveshwara and Jagjivan Ram at Ambigara Chowdayya Park near Hosapete Road.
A procession carrying the portrait of Jagjivan Ram was taken out from the Tahsildar’s office premises through Salarjung Road, Gadiyara Kambha, Gandhi Bhavan and Ashok Circle before concluding at the venue. Cultural troupes added colour to the procession.
Lok Sabha Member from Koppal K. Rajashekar Hitnal, Superintendent of Police Ram L. Arasiddi, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sidrameshwar, Assistant Commissioner Capt. Mahesh Malagitti and several officials, public representatives and community leaders were present.
