Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived here on Thursday evening on a two-day visit to review the security situation ahead of the Amarnath Yatra which is set to begin in the first week of July and to meet people affected by the recent cross-border shelling in the border district of Poonch.
This is Shah’s first visit to the Union Territory post Operation Sindoor, officials said.
After landing at the airport in a special plane, Shah drove straight to the Raj Bhawan to chair a high-level meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Friday, he will fly to Poonch, which suffered maximum damage in respect to human lives and property during the cross-border shelling by Pakistan.Poonch district recorded the highest number of 14 civilian deaths among the total 28 lives lost in the indiscriminate Pakistani shelling and drone attacks during the skirmishes between May 7 and 10.
In Poonch, Shah will distribute appointment letters among the next of kin of civilians killed in the shelling, officials said.
He is also likely to address Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Poonch ahead of Shah’s visit, with police establishing posts at various places to check vehicles. BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary visited shelling-hit areas in Poonch on Wednesday and reviewed the security situation.

After conducting a three-day tour on April 6, Shah again visited Kashmir on April 23, a day after the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Delhi’s Forest Minister Manjinder Singh visited Poonch on Wednesday and met people affected by Pakistani shelling.
