AMU professor gets Linguist of the Year award

Agra: Mohammad Jahangeer Warsi, chairperson of the department of linguistics at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been conferred with Linguist of the Year Award-2025 by Punjabi Linguistics Association for his contribution to applied linguistics and research.The award was presented during the 53rd All India Conference of Dravidian Linguists (AICDL), held at Punjabi University, Patiala, from June 18 to 20. The three-day academic conference brought together scholars and researchers working in linguistics, language teaching, speech studies and allied disciplines.Officials said the award recognised Warsi’s long academic work in applied linguistics and his role in promoting research on language, speech and modern analytical frameworks.

As chairperson of AMU’s linguistics department, he has been associated with teaching, research supervision and academic initiatives in language studies.Warsi has earlier taught at leading international institutions, including University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and University of California, Berkeley. He has also received James E McLeod Faculty Award for his academic contribution.The conference also saw participation from AMU’s research scholars.

Manzoor Ahmad presented a paper titled “From Chalkboards to Chatbots: Where AI in English Language Teaching,” which focused on the use of artificial intelligence tools in English language teaching and global pedagogy.Academics at the event discussed changing trends in linguistics, language documentation, applied language studies and emerging technologies in language classrooms. Officials said AMU’s participation reflected the university’s continuing engagement with national and international research platforms.
