VIJAYAWADA: A tragic accident at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada claimed the life of a pedestrian on Wednesday. Police are investigating whether driver negligence, pedestrian distraction, or both contributed to the fatal accident. The deceased was identified as Balu Sahu, a native of Odisha. According to police, Sahu was walking from the arrival block towards the city bus terminal when he was hit by an APSRTC bus. He died on the spot due to the impact.Preliminary investigations suggest that Sahu was looking at his mobile phone while crossing the busy bus station premises at the time of the accident. Police also suspect that the RTC bus driver, attached to the Avanigadda depot, was driving at excessive speed despite heavy passenger movement inside the terminal. The entire incident was captured on the bus station’s CCTV cameras, and investigators are examining the footage to determine the exact sequence of events. Police are trying to ascertain whether the accident was caused mainly by the driver’s negligence or the pedestrian’s lack of attention while using his mobile phone.A case has been registered by the Krishnalanka police, and further investigation is underway.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety within the crowded PNBS premises, where thousands of passengers move between platforms every day. Authorities are expected to review safety measures, including vehicle speed regulations and pedestrian movement, to prevent similar accidents in the future.
