Anti-Pakistan slogans were raised by Shia protesters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Friday, hours after a suicide blast at a Shiite mosque in Pakistan’s federal capital of Islamabad that left 31 dead and 169 injured.
Protesters in Sumbal chanted pro-India slogans and demanded an end to sectarian violence, in response to killings of Shia Muslims, a minority in Pakistan that have been frequently targeted by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Islamic State (ISIS).
The explosion took place at the Tarlai Imambargah, a Shiite mosque in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital. Police teams and rescue workers rushed to the spot and began relief operations.
Several videos circulating online show scenes of chaos at the site, with people seen running in panic. Officials present at the spot were also seen trying to control the situation and assist the injured. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the suspect, who had travelled to and from Afghanistan, was challenged by security guards at the site and blew himself up while standing among worshippers.

Pakistan’s Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry later told the media in Islamabad that while the attacker was not an Afghan, authorities had been able to determine through forensic tests the number of times he had travelled to Afghanistan, according to Dawn.
“These terrorists have reached the extremes of cowardliness. They are attacking soft targets, including markets, schools, mosques, imambargahs, banks and other such places," he was quoted as saying.
The attack was the deadliest suicide bombing in Islamabad in more than a decade, according to conflict monitor ACLED, which said it “bears the hallmarks of the Islamic State".
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and deputy PM Ishaq Dar also condemned the blast. This incident took place nearly three months after a suicide blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad killed 12 people and injured 30 people in November 2025.
