Jannik Sinner advanced at the 2026 Australian Open after Hugo Gaston retired at 6-2, 6-1. Sinner will face James Duckworth or Dino Prižmić in the second round.

Jannik Sinner started the defence of his men’s singles title with a curtailed opening match at the 2026 Australian Open.

The Italian tennis world No. 2 only played two sets, before his opponent, Hugo Gaston, retired abruptly at 6-2, 6-1 ret. in the first round on Tuesday (20 January).

Sinner advances after spending just one hour, eight minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

In the second round, he will take on either Australia’s James Duckworth or Croatian Dino Prižmić.
