A 27-year-old Delhi Police constable, Kajal Chaudhary, was allegedly brutally murdered by her husband last week, with her final moments captured during a phone call with her brother, who says he was forced to hear her screams as she was attacked.

Kajal, a commando with the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Delhi Police, died on Tuesday at a private hospital in Ghaziabad. Police allege she was assaulted at her home in Dwarka Mor by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, using a metal dumbbell before her head was smashed against a door frame.

According to investigators, Ankur allegedly called Kajal’s brother, Nikhil, during the assault. What began as a call about an argument quickly turned horrific.

“My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened," Nikhil told Hindustan Times. “He snatched it back, asked me to record the call as evidence and said he was going to kill her. Then I heard her screaming before the call disconnected."

Nikhil said the call came around 10 pm on January 22. Speaking to PTI, he recalled Ankur beginning the conversation with a threat, “Apni behen ko samjha le", after which Nikhil urged him to calm down.

“She normally wouldn’t tell us much, but that day she was sharing her ordeal. He got angry that she was talking to me and grabbed the phone," Nikhil said.

Minutes later, Nikhil received another call from Ankur. “He said, ‘Ye mar gayi hai. Hospital aajao’ (She is dead. Come to the hospital), Nikhil told PTI. “When I saw my sister… not even an enemy kills someone like this."

Kajal’s family has accused Ankur and his relatives of prolonged dowry harassment and physical abuse, including during her pregnancy. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who is now with his maternal grandparents.

Nikhil also described earlier instances of abuse, alleging that Kajal was made to do household chores during her pregnancy, even after returning from police duty. He said Ankur had slapped her on one occasion, prompting him to try to take his sister home.

“He apologised and swore on his child that he wouldn’t repeat it," Nikhil said. “I told my sister she could come back whenever she wanted and didn’t have to stay there."

Police are investigating the allegations, including claims of dowry harassment and torture, as the case continues to unfold.
