New Delhi: OpenAI has recently reported and upgraded the ChatGPT application on the iPhone to support Apple CarPlay. This upgrade enables iPhone users to access ChatGPT directly via CarPlay for the first time. This development comes shortly after Apple unveiled support for voice-based AI applications with the iOS 26.4 upgrade on iPhones.

The CarPlay version of ChatGPT is especially designed entirely around voice interaction, in line with Apple’s safety guidelines. The users can speak to the assistant just as they do on their iPhone’s application voice mode, with no text-based responses displayed on the screen.

The interface is very minimal, by providing only basic controls such as an end call button and the mute or unmute toggle, along with access to previous voice interactions. Apple’s CarPlay ecosystem restricts the application to specific categories, and it requires developers to use predefined templates.

And with iOS 26.4, Apple has expanded this framework to include voice-based conversational applications by allowing services like ChatGPT to integrate into the in-car experience while prioritizing hands-free usage.

The move also aligns with Apple’s requirement that such applications must default to voice as the primary mode of interaction and avoid visual clutter that could distract drivers. ChatGPT is among the first of the major AI platforms to adapt to this latest category. These features will be available via the latest version of the ChatGPT application on iPhone and require the device to be running iOS 26.4 or newer to function with CarPlay.
