Apple price hike in India: MacBooks, iPads now cost up to Rs 1 lakh more
Apple just made its laptops and tablets noticeably more expensive in India, and the timing stings. Barely a week after CEO Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal that price hikes had become "unavoidable," the new tags went live on Apple's India site on June 25—and some models now cost up to Rs 1 lakh more than they did at launch.
The culprit is a global memory and storage shortage. But Indian buyers are absorbing a steeper blow than most, and one quiet decision by Apple explains why.For years, Apple priced its Indian hardware on a rough 1 USD = 100 INR formula. That math is gone. The $699 MacBook Neo, which would once have landed around Rs 69,900, now sells for Rs 79,900. The shift matters beyond this round of hikes: even if memory costs ease later, a revised conversion rate tends to stick.
These prices may be the new floor, not a temporary spike.
Mac prices climb faster in India than almost anywhere else
US Macs went up roughly 15 to 20 percent. India's increases mostly sit in the twenties and thirties. The base 14-inch MacBook Pro is the clearest example, leaping Rs 70,000 to Rs 2,39,900, while its M5 Max sibling climbed a full Rs 1 lakh. The 13-inch MacBook Air rose Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,49,900, the 15-inch Air Rs 35,000 to Rs 1,79,900, and even the entry-level Neo ticked up Rs 10,000.
The Mac mini tells its own strange story: its base model quietly reverted to 256GB after a brief stint at 512GB, and at Rs 94,900, that base config is now 58.4 percent pricier than the old 256GB version.
iPad shoppers get hit even harder than Mac buyers
Tablets took the bigger swing. The 11-inch iPad Air (M4) jumped Rs 25,000 to Rs 89,900, and the iPad Pro with M5 and 256GB storage now runs Rs 1,39,900, up nearly Rs 40,000 from its Rs 99,990 launch price. The entry iPad and iPad mini both climbed past 40 percent.
Upgrades got costlier too—memory and storage that once moved in Rs 20,000 steps now jump Rs 24,000 at a time, with the priciest storage tiers climbing Rs 30,000.
Even the HomePod and Apple TV didn't escape
Apple's smaller gadgets took some of the most lopsided hikes of all. The Apple TV 4K is the most dramatic, climbing Rs 11,000—a 74 percent jump—to Rs 25,900 for the 64GB model. The HomePod mini, Apple's pint-sized speaker, rose Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,900, a 45.9 percent increase, while the full-size HomePod went up Rs 12,000 to Rs 44,900.
The Vision Pro headset sat this one out, but only because it never officially went on sale in India to begin with. Why all this? DRAM and NAND chip prices have quadrupled over the past year as AI data centres buy up supply faster than makers can produce it. Apple says it can no longer eat the difference. "We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," the company told media. Analysts warn smaller brands, without Apple's scale, will likely fare worse—making this less an Apple problem than a preview of where consumer tech pricing is headed.
