Army defuses unexploded RPG, UBGL rounds after Ulfa-I attack on Jagun camp

Dibrugarh: Within hours of the audacious pre-dawn strike by Ulfa-I on an Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at Jagun in Tinsukia district, the Army swiftly moved to eliminate a lingering and potentially deadly threat — unexploded ordnance left behind in the wake of the assault. The March 22 attack, carried out at approximately 2.05am, saw Ulfa-I cadres fire multiple rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at the commando camp in the 10th Mile area of Jagun, injuring four commandos. In addition to the RPG rounds, Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) ammunition was also found at the site — posing a grave risk to the local civilian population in the hours that followed.Responding without delay, the Red Shield Sappers, in close coordination with Assam Rifles, mobilised a specialised bomb disposal team and rushed it to the site.

The area was promptly cordoned off and stringent safety protocols were enforced to bring the situation fully under control. The unexploded ordnance was subsequently transported to a secure location away from civilian habitation, where it was neutralised in a controlled and methodical manner — eliminating any residual risk to life and property in the surrounding area.“The unexploded ordnance, including RPG and UBGL rounds, was identified and secured in a professional manner.

All safety measures were strictly observed throughout the operation. The swift and coordinated response by our teams ensured that the local populace remained safe and that no collateral damage occurred. The professionalism and precision shown by the bomb disposal team is commendable,” an Army official said. The Jagun attack — claimed by Ulfa-I and dubbed “Operation Bujoni” by the outfit — had already sent shockwaves across Assam’s security establishment, with the state just days away from going to the polls on April 9.A massive cordon-and-search operation is underway across Tinsukia district as security forces hunt for the Ulfa-I cadres responsible for the attack.
