Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu will leave Arsenal after a challenging stint marred by persistent injuries, the club announced on Friday. The decision was made by mutual agreement.

The 26-year-old defender featured for just six minutes last season, making only a single substitute appearance before a knee injury required surgery in February. That setback, along with previous calf and knee issues, severely limited his impact during his four-year tenure at the North London club.

“Unfortunately, injuries have limited Tomi’s time on the pitch in the past two seasons, with the defender making just one substitute appearance last season," Arsenal said in an official statement.

“It was therefore mutually agreed to end Tomi’s contract in order for him to start a new chapter in his career."

Tomiyasu joined Arsenal from Italian side Bologna in 2021 and quickly established himself as a reliable presence in the back line. However, recurring injuries gradually disrupted his development and availability. Over his time at the club, he made 65 Premier League appearances and scored two goals.

With Arsenal aiming to challenge for the Premier League title once again after finishing second for three consecutive seasons, the club begins its 2025–26 campaign away to Manchester United on August 17.

Tomiyasu’s next move remains unconfirmed, but both he and the club expressed hopes that a fresh start will help revive his career.
