In a significant escalation of the internal battle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the faction led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee on Monday unveiled a new leadership structure, electing MLA Arup Roy as the party’s chairperson and effectively challenging the authority of party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

At a special session attended by rebel MLAs, councillors and senior leaders, the dissident camp announced a series of organisational appointments aimed at establishing an alternative power centre within the party.

Rebel Camp Announces New Leadership

Former minister Aroop Biswas, along with MLAs Firhad Hakim, Rathin Ghosh and Sabina Yasmin, were named vice-chairpersons, while Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan, Biplab Mitra and Sandipan Saha were appointed general secretaries. Raghunathganj MLA Akhruzzaman Ansari was chosen as treasurer.

The rebel camp also constituted a National Executive Committee comprising several prominent leaders, including Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Rathin Ghosh, Imani Biswas, Golam Rabbani, Snehashish Chakraborty, Apurba Sarkar, Joydeb Haldar, Ashish Banerjee, Narendranath Chakraborty, Dinen Roy, Samar Mukherjee, Shiuli Saha, Sabina Yasmin, Akhruzzaman, Biplab Mitra, Javed Khan, Gangaprasad Sharma, Prasun Banerjee, Badal (alias Surajit), Khageswar Roy, Kajal Sheikh, Arup Roy, Chandranath Sinha, Abhijit Sinha and Arunava Sen.

Abhishek Banerjee Left Out Of Top Panel

Notably, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was not included in the newly announced National Working Committee, a move likely to deepen speculation over shifting loyalties within the party.

Faction To Inform Election Commission

Claiming that the exercise was carried out in accordance with the party constitution, Ritabrata Banerjee said the proceedings of the special session would be conveyed to the Election Commission. The rebel leadership indicated that district committees, a state unit and a panel of spokespersons would soon be constituted as part of efforts to strengthen the faction’s organisational footprint.

Even as the dissidents sought to project themselves as the “real" TMC, Ritabrata Banerjee struck a conciliatory tone towards Mamata Banerjee, saying she would be welcome to serve as the faction’s chief adviser if she so desired. “If Mamata Banerjee wants to be the chief advisor, she is most welcome," he said.

The latest developments mark a dramatic intensification of the crisis within the TMC, which has been grappling with growing dissent since its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The rebellion had earlier spilled over into the legislature and Parliament, with a section of MLAs and MPs openly backing the dissident camp and questioning the party’s existing leadership structure.
