Ex-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's former official residence, often referred to by the BJP as the "Sheesh Mahal", may soon be converted into a state guest house, according to official sources.

The Delhi government is considering a proposal to repurpose bungalow number 6 on Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines, which has remained vacant since Kejriwal vacated the premises. The proposal includes developing parking facilities, a waiting hall and other amenities required for a government guest house. It is awaiting final approval from higher authorities.

Officials said the guest house would function like other state-run facilities, accommodating visiting ministers and government officials for a prescribed fee.

Despite remaining unoccupied, the bungalow continues to be maintained by around 10 staff members, who carry out daily cleaning and upkeep, including the operation of electrical appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

The bungalow has remained at the centre of political controversy over its extensive renovation during Kejriwal's tenure as chief minister. In 2022, the Delhi government's vigilance department launched an inquiry into alleged irregularities and cost escalation in the Public Works Department's renovation work following directions from the then Lieutenant Governor.

The BJP had repeatedly targeted the residence, calling it the "Sheesh Mahal" over allegations of extravagant spending. The Central Bureau of Investigation is currently probing the renovation after a complaint filed by then Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, alleging financial irregularities.

If cleared, the proposal will give the controversial bungalow a new role as a state guest house, even as investigations into its renovation continue.
