Women’s World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka pulled out of the WTA event in Canada on Thursday citing fatigue.
The 27-year-old star was ousted from Wimbledon in the semifinal of the women’s singles event at the hands of Amanda Anisimova, who eventually went down to title-winner Iga Swiatek.
“I’m looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I’ve decided it’s in my best interest to skip Montreal," the Belarussian said.
“I’ll miss my amazing Canadian fans, but I’m already looking forward to seeing you all next year," she continued.
“Thanks for your understanding and support — it means the world to me," the three-time Grand Slam winner said.
Canadian Open tournament director, Valerie Tetreault, expressed her disappointment with the non-participation of the star
“We’re obviously disappointed that Aryna won’t be with us this year," Tetreault confirmed.
Spaniard Paula Badosa will also play no part in the event as she pulled out of the WTA tournament in Canada due to an injury days earlier.
The event in Montreal will also mark the final outing of hometown hero Eugenie Bouchard as the 31-year-old prepares to bid goodbye to the sport.
