Assam’s first modern fish market inaugurated in Jorhat

Dibrugarh: In a significant move towards modernizing local commerce and ensuring hygienic trading practices, Assam’s first state-of-the-art fish market was inaugurated in Jorhat on Wednesday. The three-storied complex, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, was officially opened by Jorhat MLA and former speaker of the assembly, Hitendra Nath Goswami. The event was attended by district commissioner Jay Shivani, Jorhat Municipal Board chairperson Lakhimi Khargharia, and hundreds of local citizens.“This is the first scientifically designed modern fish market in the state, built to benefit everyone — from wholesalers to small-scale fish sellers,” said Goswami during the inauguration ceremony.

“Our aim is to ensure that both sellers and customers can conduct their business in a clean, convenient, and organized environment,” he added. The new market features modern amenities such as a lift facility, proper drainage, and designated areas for wholesale and retail operations, all designed to maintain hygiene and accessibility while reducing congestion in Jorhat's busy commercial zones.Goswami emphasized that the centralized market will unite scattered fish traders from various parts of Jorhat, enhancing economic efficiency and customer experience.

“With this modern market, we are taking a step toward sustainable urban development while also providing dignity and improved livelihood to the local fish-sellers,” he added.Jorhat Municipal Board chairperson Lakhimi Khargharia assured that the market's operation and maintenance will be closely monitored to ensure cleanliness and proper functioning. District Commissioner Jay Shivani praised the initiative as a remarkable example of revitalizing traditional trading sectors through modern infrastructure. In addition to the fish market, Goswami announced plans for two new two-storied vegetable markets in Jorhat as part of a broader urban modernization plan. “Our goal is to make Jorhat town free from roadside vegetable vendors by providing them dedicated spaces with better facilities,” he stated, noting that construction is set to begin early next year.
