Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered Assam's Education Department to rewrite history textbooks, questioning Bagh Hazarika's role with Lachit Barphukan against the Mughals.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said he has directed the state Education Department to rewrite history textbooks for high school students, signalling a possible revision of how Assam’s past is taught.

While Sarma did not spell out the reasons for the overhaul, he raised doubts over the historical account of Bagh Hazarika, a figure mentioned in existing school textbooks.

The chief minister claimed that Bagh Hazarika never fought alongside Ahom general Lachit Barphukan against the Mughals, questioning the accuracy of narratives currently presented to students.

 Further details on the scope of the proposed revisions or the experts involved in the exercise are yet to be announced.
