The US and Israel believed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death an opportunity to hasten the end of the regime he led for 36 years. Iran’s rulers are now trying to turn his funeral into proof of the opposite: that the Islamic Republic has survived its biggest shock in decades.

Four months after Iran's supreme leader was killed in the opening US-Israel airstrikes, his coffin began its long procession through Tehran. Streets were shut, airspace was closed, daily life was put on hold and crowds gathered with flags, black banners and portraits of the late supreme leader.
