Fresh clashes broke out in Dhaka on Friday evening as police confronted activists of Inqilab Mancho in the Shahbagh area during a protest demanding justice for slain student leader Osman Hadi.

According to Dhaka Tribune, around 40 to 50 people were injured in the confrontation, including Mohiuddin Roni, an independent candidate from Dhaka-18. Police used baton charges, tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the protesters.

The violence marked the second protest on Friday near the residence of Bangladesh’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus. Earlier in the day, government employees had demonstrated at the same location, demanding implementation of the new pay commission report.

The clash began around 7:50 pm when police attempted to clear protesters from the Shahbagh intersection, amid rising tensions since the afternoon. Protesters were demanding justice for Osman Hadi’s killing and calling for a United Nations–led investigation into the case.

Police said around 50 injured activists were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, news agency PTI reported.

Osman Hadi was a prominent figure in the violent 2024 student-led protests, known as the July Uprising, that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government. He was also a candidate in the February 12 parliamentary elections. Hadi was shot in Dhaka on December 12 while campaigning and later died of his injuries.

Interim government response

The interim government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice in the case. Yunus’ press secretary, Shafiqul Alam said the government would ask the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to take charge of the investigation to ensure impartiality.

In a statement issued after the clashes, Yunus’ office said the interim administration was “deeply reviewing the legal aspects" of a UN-led probe and would formally write to the concerned UN agency on February 8.
