In a major boost to India’s Aatmanirbharta push in the defence sector, the Indian Army is set to receive the Suryastra rocket system featuring fully indigenous launchers and ground support systems, while work is also underway to indigenise the rockets.

NIBE Limited, the company developing the system in India, recently demonstrated the Suryastra before the Indian Army at ITR Chandipur. According to the company, the rocket achieved an accuracy of less than three metres CEP during the trials.

“The launcher system that you see, the ground equipment, as of today, we have indigenised that completely. The launchers, be it the battery command post or the loader vehicle, are all 100% indigenised and developed here," NIBE CTO Balakrishnan Swamy said.

The company has already secured an emergency procurement order worth around Rs 300 crore from the Indian Army for the Suryastra system. The order includes two launchers, a battery command post and a loader vehicle, with deliveries expected this year.

While the launcher and associated systems have been indigenised, the rockets are currently sourced from Israel. However, there are plans for phased localisation of the rocket system as well.

Swamy further revealed that even in the current configuration, the rockets already include Indian content, with motors being supplied by Indian companies before final integration.

The company said it is targeting over 70 per cent indigenisation for the Suryastra programme in the future. Under the current emergency procurement contract, the system already exceeds the required indigenous content threshold.

NIBE is also expecting significantly larger follow-on orders for the system. According to Swamy, the company is projecting requirements for “at least 7 to 9 regiments" and is eyeing orders worth more than Rs 6,000 crore in the long term.

The Suryastra system is designed as a long-range precision-strike rocket artillery platform with a range of up to 300 km. The platform includes mobile launchers, battery command posts and loader vehicles, and is intended to provide the Indian Army with deep-strike capability against high-value targets far beyond the range of existing Pinaka systems.

The system was featured on Kartavyapath during the Republic Day Parade 2026.
