Eiffel Tower will be shut over the weekend at 4 pm (1400 GMT).

Amid soaring temperatures across France, Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower will be closed early for tourists over the weekend at 4 pm (1400 GMT), its operator said.

“Due to the high temperatures forecast, the Eiffel Tower will be adjusting its operations" on Saturday and Sunday, the operator’s website stated. This comes as Paris remains under the weather service’s highest alert level, as France battles its third heatwave since May.

The closure comes as another intense heatwave grips France, forcing residents to stay indoors, seek relief along canals and rivers, or travel to cooler regions. Temperatures reached 41.1 degrees Celsius in the southern town of Lodève on Friday, while heat alerts covered almost the entire country.

The latest spell of extreme weather follows Western Europe’s warmest June on record, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). Last month, the region recorded an average temperature of 20.74 degrees Celsius—more than three degrees above the 1991-2020 average. Scientists also reported record June sea surface temperatures globally.
