B.K. Hariprasad, senior Congress leader and MLC, on Monday urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to make public the findings of the 2015 caste census and expedite the process for the fresh enumeration of castes in Karnataka.

Speaking to reporters at Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi, he said the State government cannot dump the report of the 2015 Socio-Economic, Educational Survey (caste census). It was the responsibility of the government to make public the findings of the report, he said.

The report was tabled in the State Cabinet, but the findings have not been officially made public. Following the Congress high command directive, the Karnataka government has decided to conduct the fresh caste survey.

Noting that backward classes departments in States are eligible to conduct a caste census, Mr. Hariprasad said the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India is responsible for conducting the Census and managing the registration of births and deaths in the country. It was not responsible for doing the caste census to examine the socio-economic backwardness of various castes, he said.

The Central government on Monday issued a notification for conducting India’s 16th census with caste enumeration in 2027, 16 years after the last such exercise in 2011.
