In a shocking turn of events, Ciarre Campbell -- brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell -- has been arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, for the murder of their 71-year-old mother, Nateal Campbell, at the Brownstones at Habersham in Buckhead.Atlanta police were called to Nateal Campbell’s home around 1.36 PM on Monday for a welfare check. Atlanta Police Department’s Lt. Christopher Bulter told reporters that officers received a welfare check on Monday from a “concerned family member.”“A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location, a possible arson incident,” Lt. Christopher Butler said. “There have been some indications of possible mental health issues with an individual.”

When the Atlanta police arrived at the Buckhead residence, they learned that a man had allegedly barricaded himself inside the home. And they found an unresponsive elderly female inside the home.Authorities later identified the suspect as Ciarre Bryce Campbell, according to Fulton County jail records. Ciarre Bryce Campbell is the 41-year-old brother of former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Calais Campbell.Nateal Campbell was found inside her Buckhead home with several cuts to her neck.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, she was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The official cause of death has not been released.According to Fulton County jail records, Ciarre Campbell was later charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of certain felonies. He remains in custody. His arraignment is pending.Attorney representing the suspect, Jay Abt, told ABC’s WSB-TV that the client is innocent until proven guilty. “We vigorously protest his innocence,” Jay Abt told the station. “We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him. And most importantly, the Campbell family, I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time.”
The Campbell family released a statement through CBS News Atlanta
The statement read: “We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
Baltimore Ravens released a statement offering condolences to the Campbell family
The statement read: “We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother. We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.”
Calais Campbell NFL career timeline
Calais Campbell is a 39-year-old defensive end for the Baltimore Ravens. He played college football for the Miami Hurricanes from 2004 to 2007. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the 2008 NFL Draft as their second-round, 50th overall pick. He played a total of nine seasons for the Cardinals. In 2017, he was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played three seasons for them. In 2020, he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.
