The Teachers’ Association and the Non-Teaching Employees’ Association of Bangalore University have written to the Governor, the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Minister for Higher Education, and the Karnataka State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, requesting that the next Vice-Chancellor of the University be appointed from among professors belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST).
The matter was discussed in the Executive Committee meeting of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Teachers’ and Non-Teaching Employees’ Associations of Bangalore University.
The associations observed that since the establishment of the University in 1964, the Government has appointed a total of 19 full-time Vice-Chancellors over the past 62 years,
not a single Vice-Chancellor belonging to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes has been appointed by the Government.
At present, Bangalore University has 380 non-teaching employees, of whom 200 belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (53%). Similarly, among the 115 permanent teaching faculty members, 75 professors (65%) belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Further, approximately 45% of the students of the University belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, as stated in the letter.
