Bengal’s new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari promised to “work for all" as he attended his first Cabinet meeting on the 14th floor of Nabanna on Monday. He announced six key decisions of his government.
“Bengal saw a deathless, intimidation-free election for the first time. We are grateful to the people and the Election Commission (EC). Also, we thank the workers, CAPF, observers, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police," said Adhikari, the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) CM of the state.
“We will work for all…People have given life, we will always remember them…We will give them justice and will take their responsibility," he said.
Key decisions
Border Security: Adhikari gave formal approval to transfer 600 acres of land to the Border Security Force for fencing the border with Bangladesh. “Within 45 days, we will give land to the BSF. A decision has been passed in the Cabinet," he said.
The Chief Secretary and the Secretary of Land and Revenue have been tasked with overseeing the expedited transfer, said reports. The move is designed to plug critical gaps in the border, curb illegal infiltration, and stop cross-border smuggling.
Census: “Today, we have issued an administrative order stating that the census operations will commence today. This initiative is finally being implemented after a delay of eleven months…The previous government, which the public completely rejected, gave a massive mandate to the BJP. That government was characterised solely by appeasement politics, institutional corruption, atrocities against women, and a complete dismantling of governance; furthermore, they even went so far as to challenge the very Constitution of the country. On June 16, 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Office of the Registrar General of India, issued a notification. It has now been nearly a year since that date. These individuals had deliberately stalled the census process. Their sole objective in holding up the census was to obstruct the efforts being undertaken by the Prime Minister to implement delimitation and thereby provide reservations specifically for our mothers and sisters. We will constitute a fact-finding committee to investigate this matter thoroughly," said Adhikari.
“The Cabinet has now granted its approval for the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme. The necessary procedures, including the signing of agreements with the Central Government’s Health Department and the completion of other requisite formalities, will officially commence starting today."
Officer Training: He reversed the previous policy to allow IAS, IPS, and WBPS officers to be sent to other states for training.

Job Recruitment: Announced a five-year age relaxation for candidates who missed recruitment opportunities in previous years.
BNS: Directed the immediate implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the state. The previous government did not implement the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). It is being adopted starting today, he said.
Ayushman Bharat: The CM also promised the benefits of Ayushman Bharat to the state. “PM Jano Arogya Yojona and all PM scheme will start here immediately," said Adhikari.
“Our government is committed to building a responsible, transparent, and people-oriented administration. The primary priority of the government is to ensure the safety and peace of the people of the state."
Present at the meeting were Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu, and Nishith Pramanik, who were sworn in as ministers with Adhikari on Saturday. Their departments have not been assigned yet. Several department secretaries and officials were also present. At 4 pm, the Chief Minister will meet the winning BJP candidates at Nabanna.
Adhikari said, “Today, at the state’s administrative building Nabanna, I held a review meeting with Chief Secretary Mr. Dushyant Nariyala (IAS), Home Secretary Mrs. Sanghamitra Ghosh (IAS), State DGP Mr. Sidhinath Gupta (IPS), and Kolkata Police Commissioner Mr. Ajay Nand (IPS) to assess the state’s law and order and administrative situation."
