The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has warned that a government investigation into its recent elections could breach international rules and risk “uncertainty" for the sport in the country.

BCB on Monday expressed “significant concern" after the National Sports Council (NSC) announced an inquiry committee to examine the October 2025 elections.

The BCB says its current administration is a “duly elected and fully operational body" acting within its own constitution.

In a strongly worded statement, the BCB suggested the move could be viewed as government interference by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Under ICC rules, member boards must manage their affairs autonomously without political intervention. The board confirmed it has already held “informal discussions" with senior ICC leadership regarding the probe, noting that any developments interpreted as interference could trigger formal scrutiny under global governance provisions.

“In this context, the matter has been informally referenced in discussions with senior representatives of the ICC leadership," the BCB statement said.

The BCB argues that the gazette issued by the NSC threatens the stability and continuity of the elected administration.

“It was indicated that developments which could be interpreted as interference in the affairs of a democratically elected cricket board may raise governance concerns within the international cricket framework," it said.

While the board expressed a willingness for constructive dialogue, it stressed that preserving its autonomy is essential to meeting internationally recognised standards. Before taking any formal steps with the ICC, the BCB intends to engage directly with the National Sports Council to seek clarification on the intent and implications of the investigation.

The warning follows a period of heightened tension between the board and the government body. The BCB urged the NSC to resolve the issue in a way that safeguards the independence of Bangladesh cricket while protecting the country’s standing in the international community.

The ICC has previously taken a hard line on government meddling, having suspended boards such as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in recent years for similar breaches of autonomy.

“Given the potential implications for Bangladesh cricket at the international level, the BCB considers it important to address this matter with due care and transparency. Before initiating any formal communication or proceedings with the ICC, the BCB believes it is appropriate to engage directly with the National Sports Council to seek clarification regarding the context, intent, and possible implications of the gazette," the statement read.

The BCB has asked NSC to shut down the investigation.

“Accordingly, the BCB has requested the National Sports Council to close this matter in a manner that safeguards the stability, independence, and continued progress of Bangladesh cricket, while also ensuring that the country’s standing within the international cricket community remains fully protected," BCB said.
