Authorities in Bangladesh have stepped up security across all major airports following intelligence warnings of a possible attack involving a suspected militant and two former military personnel.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) said enhanced security measures have been implemented at all eight airports in the country, including three international terminals, after receiving an alert from police headquarters.
“We have received a letter from the police headquarters asking us to strengthen security," CAAB Chairman Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq told reporters in Dhaka. “Airports are designated as key point installations and remain under strict security, but this has been further enhanced."
Police had earlier warned that a member of a banned militant outfit was in contact with two former military personnel, raising concerns about coordinated attacks.
According to the alert, potential targets could include airports, parliament buildings, and places of worship, with attackers possibly using firearms, sharp weapons, or explosive devices.
Bangladesh has faced intermittent threats from extremist groups, including those inspired by Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
The warning has revived memories of past attacks, including the 2016 siege at a Dhaka bakery that killed 22 people, most of them foreigners. Around the same period, several secular writers and activists were targeted, including Avijit Roy, who was killed by extremists.
Officials said security agencies are on high alert and monitoring the situation closely to prevent any potential incident.
