Bangladesh security forces foiled a major terror plot targeting key national institutions, including the National Parliament, Army and Police establishments, religious sites, entertainment centres and the iconic Shahbag area of Dhaka, according to an intelligence circular issued by Bangladesh Police Headquarters.

The plot came to light following the arrest of Istiyak Ahmed, alias Sami, and Abu Mohammad, both members of a banned and declared terrorist organisation. During interrogation, investigators obtained critical intelligence suggesting that the duo had been in regular contact with two sacked Army personnel, who allegedly conspired with them to carry out the attacks.

Security agencies said the attackers had planned to use explosives, locally-made bombs and sharp weapons to strike at high-value targets across the country. The targets reportedly included the National Parliament building, Bangladesh Police and Army installations, religious places of worship, entertainment centres and the Shahbag Chattar area.

The Bangladesh Police Headquarters directed all senior police officials across divisions- including Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh- to immediately strengthen security around all listed establishments. Authorities have also been asked to initiate legal action against the named suspects and to keep a close watch on their movements.

Officials described the individuals involved as a serious threat to national security, warning that they may be planning coordinated attacks on multiple targets simultaneously.

The circular, signed by a senior DIG-rank officer at Bangladesh Police Headquarters and marked Urgent/Confidential, has been distributed to Additional IGPs, Commissioners, Range DIGs and Police Superintendents across all districts of the country.

Investigations are ongoing and further arrests are expected.
