BAREILLY: Bareilly Cantonment has gone carbon-negative, with a scientific study by TERI School of Advanced Studies confirming that its green cover absorbs far more carbon than the cantonment emits. The finding puts Bareilly Cantonment ahead of its own 2030 carbon neutrality target — set during Manthan-2025 by the Raksha Mantri — by nearly four years."TERI's study found the cantonment's plantation areas sequester around 61,128 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually, against a net carbon balance of (-) 60,386 tonnes, establishing a clear carbon surplus. The total carbon stored in plantation cover stands at approximately 1.89 lakh tonnes of CO₂ equivalent," said Bareilly CEO Dr Tanu Jain. She credited the Cantonment Board, defence authorities, and residents for the achievement. TERI noted the model is replicable across other cantonments and urban local bodies in India.
