A clinical finish from England striker Harry Kane earned Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, securing second place in the Champions League table for the German giants.

The result was heartbreaking for PSV, who missed out on the play-offs despite a Champions League campaign that included massive wins against Liverpool and Napoli.

Bayern were already assured a spot in the last 16, prompting manager Vincent Kompany to make five changes from the side that suffered a 2-1 defeat against Augsburg, their first Bundesliga loss since March.

Kompany could afford to leave Kane, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and 24-year-old France international winger Michael Olise on the bench.

The hosts started brightly on a freezing night in Eindhoven, with veteran striker Ivan Perisic firing a volley just over the bar after only three minutes.

A free-flowing first half saw goalkeepers at both ends pressed into action, with Bayern’s Jonas Urbig making a stunning save from a Perisic header just before the break.

Neither side managed to apply the finishing touch, and the first half ended 0-0, leaving Peter Bosz’s men staring at elimination as it stood.

The visitors eventually broke the deadlock when a PSV attack fizzled out, leaving them exposed at the back as Bayern capitalised on a counter-attack.

After clever interplay with teenage midfielder Lennart Karl, striker Jamal Musiala lashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range, resulting in stunned silence at the Philips Stadion.

Kane finally entered the match on 62 minutes, alongside 30-year-old Germany international forward Serge Gnabry, as Bayern deployed heavy artillery for the final third.

PSV fought for their Champions League lives, and Ismael Saibari, their most potent threat, gave them a lifeline in the 77th minute.

After a one-two with midfielder Guus Til, the 25-year-old Morocco international midfielder curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

However, Kane had the final say, calmly slotting home from a Luis Diaz cut back in the 84th minute, leaving no time for a Dutch miracle.
