A team of doctors at Lake View Hospital in Belagavi performed a life-saving surgery on a 75-year-old patient who was suffering from a rare health condition.
The patient was admitted with severe abdominal pain, vomiting and signs of infection.
After detailed evaluation, doctors diagnosed him with gastric volvulus, a rare condition in which the stomach twists abnormally, cutting off its blood supply.
Due to the delay in presentation, part of the stomach had become damaged and perforated, leading to septicemia.
The medical team immediately performed an emergency surgery to correct the problem. The damaged portion of the stomach was removed through a procedure known as proximal gastrectomy.
A team led by Sreeshail Hanagandi and Pradeep G. Vagarali with anaesthesia support from Sanjeev Kumar Durdi conducted the operation.
After the procedure, the patient was closely monitored and treated with antibiotics and supportive care. Doctors reported that the patient responded well to treatment and gradually recovered. He was later discharged in stable condition.
The procedure was performed at an affordable cost in wake of the patient’s poor financial condition, said a release.
