West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading fear and division through its NRC campaign, after a 57-year-old man from North 24 Parganas reportedly took his own life in panic over the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The deceased, identified as Pradeep Kar, a resident of Mahajati Nagar in Agarpara, was found hanging from the ceiling inside his home. Local residents discovered the body and informed the police. Officers from Khardah Police Station arrived soon after, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Police said a diary was recovered from beside the body. In it, several entries referred to the NRC, and on the final page, a line read: “NRC is responsible for my death." The incident has caused shock and concern in the neighbourhood.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister took to X to express her condolences and condemned what she called the BJP’s ‘politics of fear and division.’ She claimed that the party’s ongoing NRC campaign had caused widespread panic among citizens."
