A protest over alleged corruption and the collection of "cut money" sparked tension in the Amardah Gram Panchayat area of Shyampur in Howrah on Sunday.

A section of local residents staged a demonstration in the Sitapur Dewantala market area, alleging corruption in various government schemes, including the 100-day work programme and housing projects.

During the protest, demonstrators allegedly broke a raw egg on the head of the Amardah Gram Panchayat Pradhan. As the situation turned tense, the police reached the spot and escorted the Pradhan to safety.

In yet another instance of Trinamool Congress leaders facing public ire after losing power in West Bengal, a leader accused of corruption in the 100-day employment scheme faced public humiliation after angry villagers allegedly paraded him through an area in West Bengal's Shyampur with his head tonsured, a garland of shoes around his neck, and a rope tied around his waist.

The leader at the centre of the controversy was identified as Sannyasi Manna. Police later rescued him from the crowd and took him into custody.

A TMC block panchayat committee member and once influential leader, against whom multiple cases are allegedly registered, was also dragged by locals and paraded through the streets of Hooghly.
