The West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 are set to kick off with the first phase of polling on April 23, placing several high-profile candidates at the centre of an intense political contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Who Are The Key Faces?

Leading the spotlight is Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition and a key challenger to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. After defeating Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021, Adhikari is once again contesting from the seat, where he faces TMC’s Pabitra Kar, a former aide-turned-rival. Adhikari is also contesting from Bhabanipur, setting the stage for another fierce battle with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also contesting from the seat.

In Kharagpur Sadar, senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh is attempting a comeback after previously winning the seat in 2016. He faces TMC’s Pradeep Sarkar, with the constituency expected to witness a closely fought battle following BJP’s narrow win in 2021.

Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is another key face, contesting from Baharampur in a bid to revive his political stronghold after losing the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

High-Stakes Contests Shape Phase 1

In Asansol Dakshin, BJP’s Agnimitra Paul faces TMC’s Tapas Banerjee in a rematch of their 2021 contest, making it one of the key urban battlegrounds.

Among other notable candidates, former India football captain Prasun Banerjee is contesting from Chanchal, while BJP’s Rekha Patra, who rose to prominence during the Sandeshkhali protests, is in the fray from Hingalganj.

Adding a unique dimension is Humayun Kabir, who is contesting independently from Domkal after launching his own party.

With these prominent faces in the fray, the first phase of polling is expected to set the tone for a fiercely contested election in West Bengal.
